Trace Adkins’ Character on ‘Monarch’ Reminds Him of Himself

Trace Adkins will soon trade the concert stage for the television screen, when he stars in the FOX TV show, Monarch, opposite award-winning actress, Susan Sarandon. Adkins stars as Albie Roman, who along with his wife, Dottie Roman (played by Sarandon), make up country music’s most powerful couple.

Although the role is fictitious, Adkins finds a lot of similarities between who he is as an artist, and the role he plays on Monarch.

“He’s a no-nonsense kind of guy, and I’m kind of that way too,” Adkins tells Fox News. “He’s not very animated, and neither am I. We say what we’ve gotta say, and don’t have to yell it … just kind of move through this life as softly and peacefully as they’ll allow us to, but when they don’t – we’ll do what we’ve gotta do.”

The high drama show is full of twists and turns that Adkins says will keep viewers on the edge of their seat.

“There’s a lot of curveballs that are going to come that you don’t see coming,” Adkins hints.

It was recently revealed that several country music artists would make guest appearances throughout the first season, including Martina McBrideShania TwainLittle Big Town and Tanya Tucker. The Grand Ole Opry member especially loved being around his peers while filming Monarch‘s debut season.

“It’s a lot of fun to be on this show and have all the musical guests come in,” Adkins acknowledges. “That’s a real treat for me,”

Adkins is one of several artists, including Blake Shelton and Tim McGraw, who have become a TV and movie star, respectively, in addition to their roles as country music superstars. But Adkins, a seasoned actor in his own right, says he has never reached out to either of them for advice.

“Blake’s thing is a completely different animal,” Adkins reflects. “You can’t compare that stuff … Tim’s a good actor, I’ve always respected what he does. I’ve just kind of done my own thing, haven’t had to really lean on anybody too much for a lot of advice.”

Still, although comfortable in taking on different characters as an actor, Adkins admits that starring opposite Sarandon was a bit intimidating.

“It was terrifying at first, but then very quickly I realized that she is so good, so professional, that she is going to carry the scene,” Adkins concedes. “You just try to hang on and make it to the buzzer, and she’ll take care of it.”

Monarch will premiere with a special two-night event on Sunday, Sept. 11, immediately following the FOX NFL doubleheader, between 8:00 and 9:00 PM ET. The show will then move to Tuesday nights, beginning on September 20, at 9:00 PM ET.
