2020 ACM Awards: Old Dominion’s ‘One Man Band’ Wins Song of the Year

Old Dominion‘s “One Man Band” earned the ACM Award for Song of the Year. The song was written by Josh Osborne along with Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen and Brad Tursi from the group.

“Songwriting is what got us here,” Matthew said, while the rest of the winners stood behind him wearing masks. “This is not what I thought I would say, but we’re sitting in this empty room, and I can hear Andrew, our friend that passed away, I can hear him saying, ‘I know who you are.’ He used to yell that at us, and I can feel your dad, Josh, smiling. I can feel how proud he is.

“I can feel your brother,” he continued, looking at Brad. “I can feel them all, and they’re so proud. It’s such an honor to receive this in their presence. Thank you guys for this.”

Old Dominion went in a new direction with “One Man Band,” which was a stripped down version, showing off Matthew’s voice alone.

“One of the things we talk about the most in this band is how we can’t imagine being on this crazy ride alone. We have each other to celebrate the highs and get through the challenges with. It’s one of the best parts of being a BAND,” he said (via Songfacts). “Sure, you can make music alone. But if you find people you have a chemistry with, a whole new world opens up.”

“I think it’s the same with life and love,” he continued. “You can go it alone. But sometimes there is another person out there that adds something to your ‘music’ that you would have never had on your own. That’s the show you want to take on the road. That’s what this song is about.”

“One Man Band” appears on Old Dominion’s self-titled album, released in 2019. After winning for Song of the Year, Old Dominion also won the ACM Award for Group of the Year.
