Lainey Wilson‘s Whirlwind Deluxe is out. The record features all 14 songs on her original Whirlwind record, plus five new songs.
“I had just another time where I was like, songs were just coming out of me,” Wilson tells Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe. “And it was on the tail end of the Whirlwind, but I still felt like they were a part of it, a part of the Whirlwind story, so that’s why I felt like, we just need to go in and tack these on the end of it, because it’s still a part of the Whirlwind era.”
Lowe comments that the five new songs, including Wilson’s current “Somewhere Over Laredo,” show a growth in Wilson since Whirlwind came out in 2024. It’s a claim that Wilson does not dispute.
“[There’s] a sense of peace,” Wilson says. “You can hear it, even in ‘Somewhere Over Laredo,’ and in ‘Peace, Love and Cowboys.’ There are certain songs on there that I feel like just feel even more grounded and centered. There’s a little magical feeling to some of it. It feels like a step into another direction.”
The Story Behind “Somewhere Over Laredo”
Wilson wrote “Somewhere Over Laredo” with Trannie Anderson, Dallas Wilson and Andy Albert. Not surprisingly, Wilson was inspired to write the song while she was in an airplane.
“I spend a lot of my time in the air on a plane, headed to the next town, to the next show,” Wilson tells iHeart. “And I catch myself just looking out the window and dreaming, and thinking, and reminiscing, talking to God, writing songs. And I feel like this song right here, it gave me an opportunity to step back into a pair of shoes that I wore years ago, and I got to tell a story from that perspective. And that’s what country music is. It’s about taking you back to a certain time and place, and memory and feeling, and that’s what we wanted to capture in this song right here.”
Wilson also nods to Judy Garland’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in “Somewhere Over Laredo.” The song is currently in the Top 20.
“It was cool to be able to tip our hat at the same time to one of the most classic songs of all time,” Wilson says.
