Carrie Underwood Vows to Give Her Children a Normal Childhood

Carrie Underwood has spent more than 20 years as a celebrity, ever since winning Season 4 of American Idol in 2005. But for Underwood and her husband, Mike Fisher, their sons, 11-year-old Isaiah and seven-year-old Jacob, will always come first.

For that reason, Underwood eschews much of the lifestyle choices that are typical for a celebrity, in favor of giving her two boys a much more normal childhood.

“I went from living on a farm to being on stage in front of a ton of people,” Underwood says on SiriusXM Front Row. “And traveling, and we’re in a different city every day. I learned very quickly that this is not real life. It’s not real life. It’s so wonderful. I love performing. I love singing. I love writing. I love being creative. Singing is definitely one of my happy places, but the world that that takes you to is just not real. And more than anything, for my family, I want them to know that.”

Underwood only has a few dates on her tour calendar in 2026. Her last big tour, Denim & Rhinestones, concluded in 2023. Underwood’s choice to spend most of her time at home is largely due to her two sons.

“It was hard even taking my kids on tour sometimes,” Underwood admits. “Because every hotel we’d go to, they’d just have toys. People would just give them things. And I’m like, ‘This just isn’t real.’ So it’s important for me that home is just way different than this. And I feel like we have definitely established that.”

Not only does Underwood spend most of her time on their family’s farm, located just outside of Nashville, but she is a very hands-on parent, as is her husband.

“My kids see me … We get up, we take them to school,” Underwood shares. “We’re making breakfast, packing lunches. We eat dinner at least five nights a week at the dinner table, and it’s something I cooked. I don’t know if it’s good or not, but we ain’t starving.”

“I’m telling you, I’m not a chef,” she adds, “but we ain’t starving. But yeah, I mean, all of those real hobbies, that’s reality.”

This isn’t the first time Underwood has spoken out about making her family a priority. She recently revealed that when she is home, any type of work is off-limits.

“I don’t bring work home with me,” Underwood shares on The View. “And it is the opposite of what I do everywhere else. Being on stage and being at home, these are two different people, pretty much. And I love that because it’s like, they’ll come to shows, and they’ll see me do what I do, and I feel like they’re proud.”

“Mom makes dinner,” she adds. “I’m usually covered in dirt, or I have farm animals everywhere, or I’m covered in poop or whatever it is. That’s mom. And I hope, more than anything, that’s what they take away from me, and that’s what they remember about me. Like she was mom, and every once in a while she goes and gets on stage.”

Underwood is spending some time away from home, at least for a few more weeks. She is currently serving her second season as a judge on American Idol, working alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
