Kenny Chesney is opening up about “Burn My Boat,” the first song on his forthcoming new Silver Sands Marina album. Written by Casey Beathard, Tucker Beathard and Ryan Tyndall, “Burn My Boat” is the first track on the record.

“‘Burn My Boat’ was one of those songs, when I first heard it, I went, ‘I never heard that said in a song,'” Chesney says on TalkShopLive. “I wanted to put it first, because I wanted to take people down a completely different narrow pathway when it comes to listening to my music. And it’s a great sentiment to start the record with. I found my island, you can burn my boat. And what you — surrender is a great word, because we all try to hang on to this idea of who we are, right?

“And when I heard ‘Burn My Boat,’ it was like, wow,” he continues. “This is so much a part of me, and everything that I’ve been through, to stand in this moment. But I just had never heard it said, the idea. And so I knew — I didn’t know it was going to start the record, but I knew it was going to be on the record.”

When announcing the release of “Burn My Boat,” the  Country Music Hall of Fame member said it was the perfect way to start Silver Sands Marina.

“No matter how many sequences, adding those three songs, ‘Burn My Boat’ was the exact thing I wanted to say,” Chesney explains. “And it’s in the chorus, recognizing ‘where I’m supposed to be’ is that sense of true arrival, knowing where you’re supposed to be. When you’re restless, and I am, there is no greater peace or freedom. Even more, ‘Burn My Boat’ wasn’t a song of surrender, but arrival.

“t builds and builds, like Lord Huron’s ‘Ends of the Earth,’ ” he adds. “But what it delivers is what I think most of us are hoping to find. That line: ‘Take this heart and light it / Send it up in smoke,’ it really is burning off all the things that distract us from what matters in this faster, harder, more world we deal with.”

What Kenny Chesney Says About ‘Silver Sands Marina’

Silver Sands Marina, out on September 25, began with the title track, which in many ways shaped the entire project.

“It’s funny how records show you who they are,” Chesney says. “And Silver Sands Marina came together in a whole other way when we found the title track, and a couple others. When we went in and cut those last three tracks, I realized: it’s like a rock in your shoe. It’ll bother you until it’s right when you’re dealing in songs. But when it’s right, you know.”

Part of country music for more than 30 years, the 58-year-old wasn’t afraid to try something new with Silver Sands Marina.

“Some of these songs are unlike anything people have heard, or haven’t heard in a long time,” Chesney hints. “Some of them go deep, some of them will make people turn it up, a few will make them laugh… But, together, I think they’ll remind them how great it is to be alive. Even on days where you need a song like ‘Carry On,’ we’re making the best of what we’ve got.”
