Maggie Rose Talks Honest New 'Half Moon' Album: 'I Just Wanted to Serve the Song' [EXCLUSIVE]

Maggie Rose has a gorgeous new album, out now. The two-time Grammy-nominated singer recently released Half Moon, a ten-track record that was co-written entirely by Rose, her first since No One Gets Out Alive in 2024.

Rose started working on Half Moon while she was towards the end of her pregnancy with her first child, penning a lot of the songs with Lawrence Rothman and Daniel Tashian, who also produced the project.

“We were in this incubator of just being in this creative stream that makes it so cohesive,” Rose tells Everything Nash, speaking of the record. “We started writing when I was in my third trimester, kind of in my late pregnancy, and we finished it in the months after Graham was born. It’s this really beautiful documentation of this season that was so full of power and love and transformation. And there was a lot of freedom, too.

“That was also me willing that fun, carefree side of me to still be there on the other side of this big change,” she adds. “It’s one of the happiest seasons of my life, but also super dynamic. I was holding a lot of emotions at once, and I tried to give them all their justice on the record, and honor those emotions.”

Why Maggie Rose Defies Genres in ‘Half Moon’

In an era where artists try to fit into certain genres and sounds, Rose refreshingly remains free of any constraints. Instead, the singer-songwriter stayed true to what felt authentic to her, without trying to categorize or label it.

“I think that’s just a culmination of having done this for so long,” Rose explains. “I credit living in Nashville in the sense that it has made me proximate to so many different musicians. I’ve learned from some of the best, and I’ve gotten to tour with a lot of different-sounding, but serious musicians like [Chris] Stapleton and Kelly Clarkson and Tedeschi Trucks, and doing stuff with the Allman Family Revival, playing Bonnaroo and also the Opry. This music belongs in all those places. But I think this album is just years of studying in all those different communities.

“And that’s what I love about the sound is that it’s all very much coming from real experience,” she continues. “And I’m not trying to be contrived in anything, but I just wanted to serve the song.”

The Title Track of ‘Half Moon’ by Maggie Rose

Asked if Rose has a favorite track on Half Moon, and she says no. But she does say that the title track holds a special place in her heart.

“I think the title track of Half Moon is special just because I wrote it two days before Graham was born,” Rose reveals. “That’s when I was just an antenna for emotion, and it was very intense. And I feel like without having had the opportunity to write a song that day, I wouldn’t have been able to articulate just what I was feeling. But through the song, I feel like you can navigate these crazy emotions that you aren’t really sure how to put into words.”

“Half Moon” says in part, “One foot in heaven, one foot on the ground / When the evening is setting, I come back around / Always reflecting the light you put out / Don’t know why I never learn.”

“He was born under a full pink moon, so I love that story,” Rose shares. “And how the whole album is very analogous to the phases of the moon, and just the moon itself being feminine and dependable and presenting in different ways from one day to the next.”

Maggie Rose’s Goal With ‘Half Moon’

Rose is no stranger to releasing music. One of the most respected artists in and around Nashville, Rose has spent more than a dozen years honing her craft and sharing her music with the world. But with Half Moon, her fifth full-length record, Rose has a very specific goal in mind.

“I want people to listen to the whole album,” Rose says. ‘I think that just diving into the project, we put together an album that tells a story. … I feel still a little undiscovered, even after having done this for so long. I don’t feel overlooked. I don’t feel like people have listened to everything I’ve done, and assessed it and moved on. I think that there’s just so much out there. We’ve built this great fan base and this live show. I want people to come to the show and see it, and come into the world that we’ve built with this record. But also, I would love that community to really claim this music.”
