Blake Shelton Is Developing a TV Drama, ‘God’s Country,’ on NBC

Blake Shelton‘s “God’s Country” is being made into a TV drama! The song, written by HARDY, Devin Dawson and Jordan Schmidt, became a multi-platinum, No. 1 hit for Blake, and will now also soon be a new show, airing on NBC.

According to Deadline, the show is being created by Blake, along with Gary Scott Thompson, producer of Las Vegas and writer of The Fast and the Furious, and Universal Television. The story will follow a family whose hard-working Midwestern father dies mysteriously in a car accident, leaving his grown children to uncover a shocking secret.

Narvel Blackstock and Laurie Pozmantier will executive produce the series, along with Blake and Gary. Cast members and a release date have yet to be announced.

“God’s Country” won Single of the Year at both the 2019 CMA Awards and the recent ACM Awards. Perhaps more importantly, it’s the song Blake credits with helping revitalize his career, when he thought he might be nearing an end of his career in country music.

“‘God’s Country’ is a song that was sent to me by [producer] Scott Hendricks,” Blake recalled (via PopCulture). “I was actually in Oklahoma, on the ranch, and I’ll never forget it. I was actually running a skid steer, and they sent it to me. I was shocked. I had to stop and just listen to this song, because the song was talking to me about a place that I was in at that moment, which was a place in the middle of nowhere that meant something to me that probably nobody else could ever understand, what that is and what it is inside of me and what my connection is to the land.

“At that moment, I realized, ‘I’ve gotta record this song,'” he added. “And I think I even decided before I even recorded it, ‘This has got to be the song that I put out next.'”

The 44-year-old admits he doesn’t know where he would be in his country music career without “God’s Country.”

“It just kind of turned everything around for me, as far as airplay, and even being nominated for something,” Blake said at a media event in 2019. “I hadn’t even been nominated for a CMA [in five years]. I didn’t even mark that  off on my calendar anymore.”

Blake’s current single is “Happy Anywhere,” which he sings with his longtime girlfriend, Gwen Stefani. He will return for his 19th consecutive season as coach of The Voice, which will premiere on October 19 on NBC.
