Blake Shelton On the Burnout That Led Him to Walk Away

Blake Shelton On the Burnout That Led Him to Walk Away

Blake Shelton had the world almost in the palm of his hand, for more than a decade. A coach on The Voice for 23 seasons, ever since the show began in 2011,the TV notoriety also did wonders for his already successful country music career.

Unfortunately for Shelton, it also made him exhausted. So after his financial managers already told him he had enough money to live comfortably for the rest of his life, after he asked them early in his career to let him know when that moment arrived, Shelton boldly chose his mental health over making more money.

“I just turned it off and went to the house,” Shelton tells Forbes. “I don’t think anybody really thought I would indulge like that, when I said I’m going to the farm, and I’m just going to the farm. And that is truly what I did.”

What Made Blake Shelton Get Back to Work

Shelton’s eponymous debut album came out in 2001. So by the time he left The Voice in 2023, Shelton had more than earned the right to step away. With financial security, the need to work to make money was no longer relevant.

“If you start talking to me about [financial] stuff in a meeting, I start hearing birds chirping in the background. It’s not that I don’t care,” Shelton says. “Maybe it is that I don’t care, actually. I’ve learned over the years to stay in my lane.”

He might have stayed on his Oklahoma ranch, with his wife, Gwen Stefani, and his three stepsons, if not for a phone call from Post Malone. The rapper-turned-country singer wanted Shelton to join him on “Pour Me A Drink,” for Post Malone’s F-1 Trillion album. And suddenly, Shelton was back.

“I really credit Post Malone for this new energy that I have because I was kind of just complacent and not in any hurry,” Shelton tells People. “Then that kid came along and asked me to sing on his song with him. It took off and was a big hit this summer, and it reminded me like, ‘Hey, get off your a–! This may be your last chance to really take a big swing at this thing.’ So here I am.”

Blake Shelton Reignites His Country Music Career

Once Shelton was back, he was back. He switched record labels, from Warner Music Nashville, where he had been for most of his career, to Broken Bow Records. He released his For Recreational Use Only album, a record that includes “Texas” and “Stay Country or Die Tryin’,” both No. 1 hits. He is headlining his own Las Vegas residency, and just executive produced The Road, a new reality TV talent show on CBS.

There are other projects in the works as well. But this time, Shelton is doing what he wants to do, not what he thinks his bank account needs.

“Now that I’ve gotten to this point in my life, if I’m giving up some time in Oklahoma, it needs to be for something that I know is going to count,” Shelton says.

Shelton also has new music coming in 2026, likely a continuation of For Recreational Use Only.

“When I made this album, I made way more music than I needed,” Shelton reveals on Country Countdown USA. “I held on to some of it. I’m thinking one day you and I will be sitting here again like we are today. If they tell me they’re gonna do a deluxe version, I have just what they need right here.”
