Bon Jovi, Jennifer Nettles Release ‘Do What You Can,’ Inspired by COVID-19

15 years after Jon Bon Jovi and Jennifer Nettles released their duet, “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” the pair just released another collaboration. “Do What You Can” was released on September 18, and inspired by the impact of COVID-19 on the country and beyond. The song’s idea began with a caption the rocker posted, showing him washing dishes at one of his JBJ Soul Kitchen restaurants, which said, “If you can’t do what you do, do what you can.”

“This COVID crisis caused something crazy to happen, but out of it came some different ways of thinking, and ways to touch people,” Jon shared on Facebook with Jennifer, when announcing the duet. “And songwriting, as you and I both know, is an integral part of touching the people who then relate to those songs, but in this case, are living this song. And so, when I wrote it, I knew it was going to touch people’s lives, and in essence, they could be our collaborators.”

Bon Jovi previously released “Do What You Can ” over the summer, before Jon realized he wanted the Sugarland singer on the track.

“When it was finished, I was thinking of you because I thought back to the days when we did ‘Who Says You Can’t Go Home,'” Jon recalled. “It was fun, and it was life-changing for us. It was a No. 1 song, and you and I got a Grammy out of the deal. That was the band’s first No. 1 country single, which was a big deal. So I thought, with this song, what a way to broaden its appeal, would be to have you on it again. We were magic the first time.”

Jennifer also spoke out about the song on social media, in advance of its release.
