Cam Vows to Honor Historic Venue With ‘Live at the Ryman’ Performance (EXCLUSIVE)

Cam will perform on Friday night, August 21, as part of the Ryman Auditorium’s Live at the Ryman livestream concert series. For Cam (real name: Camaron Ochs), it’s a chance to not only perform — something she appreciates even more now during the coronavirus pandemic — but to honor one of the most iconic music venues of all time.

“We had some rehearsals, getting ready, and I was kind of nervous,” Cam admitted to Everything Nash. “We have a whole thing planned about how to shift the show, so you’re having a show on purpose with the Ryman as an empty church. You’re kind of having a bit of a seance with all the ghosts that are always there.

“You’re inviting these spirits, and the vibe, with some of these throwbacks that we’re going to do to honor that we’re in this space,” she continued. “It is empty, and it’s so historic. It’s a purposeful kind of set, and being livestreamed, what that means is you don’t have the timing of an audience coming back at you with noise or energy. You have to be like a radio DJ; you just keep going.”

The idea of performing to an empty Ryman initially made Cam question how the show would go, but not anymore. With mere hours until she takes the stage, the California native is more ready than ever.

“Yesterday, I was nervous, going, ‘What is this? And who am I playing to? I won’t be able to see everybody,'” Cam conceded. “And this morning I woke up, and I was like, ‘It’s show day! Let’s do the show!’ I’m so excited to be doing it at the Ryman. It’s so comfortable there. Even though it’s empty, it’s still very comfortable to be there.

“There’s no way it cannot be something that’s frozen in my mind for the rest of time,” she added. “It’s such an iconic … it’s very precious to be able to do this right now. It’s going to be with me for a while.”

Cam joins an eclectic list of artists, including Scotty McCreery, Brett Young and more who are participating in the Live at the Ryman series, but Cam promises to put her own spin on her time on the sacred stage.

“I think different people are going to take different approaches to what it means to do a livestream,” Cam said. “And I’m kind of like The Carol Burnett Show or Mister Rogers. I have a couch, and it’s very intimate. There’s a feeling like you really are there and not just a live to DVD concert that you just happened to be watching on TV. It definitely feels like something that’s created for our show, that’s supposed to be meeting you in your living room.”

Cam will perform some of her earlier hits from her 2015 Untamed record, as well as some of her newer ones, from her upcoming The Otherside album, scheduled to be released on October 30.

“We have ‘Diane,’ ‘Till There’s Nothing Left,’ ‘Redwood Tree,’ Classic,'” she revealed. “I have one other song that I’m going to play off the new album, and then some of the Untamed.”

Livestream at the Ryman, which kicked off last week with For King & Country, will run for six weeks, concluding on September 18 with Old Crow Medicine Show. Cam’s show begins at 8:00 PM CT. Tickets for Cam’s Live at the Ryman performance are only $10, and are available for purchase at Ryman.com.
