Clint Black Recalls One of His Strangest Fan Encounters

Clint Black is known for being a congenial and friendly person, on and off the stage, but even he has his limits. The Grand Ole Opry member recalled one time when some fans went a little too far by knocking on his front door, before he was even fully awake.

“[I had] neighbors who would come up in their boats, when I had a house on the lake,” Clint shared on the Bobby Bones Show. “They’d be waving their beer cans, yelling, ‘We’re killing time!’ Somebody actually knocked on my door. She and her friends, this group of ladies. They knocked on my door, really early in the morning. They were like a welcome wagon, or an interrogation wagon, really. One of them was like, ‘Well, we just wanted to come by and see if you were really as nice as you seem.’ And I thought, ‘Well you should have come later in the afternoon.'”

Clint just performed last Saturday (June 20) to an empty Grand Ole Opry, along with Darius Rucker, while the Opry continues weekly shows without an audience. The 58-year-old took the stage one day after releasing his latest Out of Sane album, which includes “America (Still in Love With You),” which Clint wrote with fellow Opry member Steve Wariner.

“That’s a song that comes out of the great appreciation for the life I have here, and all the opportunities I’ve had,” Clint said of the patriotic song. “It was just an idea; when Steve Wariner came over to the house to show me his new guitar, his Steve Wariner model, Gretsch. I told him about the idea. He loved it and said, ‘We ought to write it.’ I just launched into it, and didn’t even ask. I just started working on it. The first question was, ‘What do we do with it musically?’ and it grew from there. Before we were even half-finished with the song, I was over on my computer, just texting musicians, and trying to find out who was available when.

“Four days later, we were recording the song, and barely got it finished in time to include it on this new album, Out of Sane,” he continued. “I managed to get a homemade video made for it, during quarantine … We really wanted it to be a song for all of our friends who have differing points of view, and a different way of looking at America. But as different as we all are, we have one thing in common: we love this country, and we want to see it do well, and we want to see everybody in good health, get back to work, and come together and unite to keep helping this country to be what it aspires to be.”
