Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood Open Up About Performing at an Empty Grand Ole Opry

Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood are both longtime members of the Grand Ole Opry, but Saturday night’s (May 2) show was unique for the couple, since they performed to an empty venue. The Opry, which just wrapped up its 4922nd consecutive show, is currently closed to the public due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but both Garth and Trisha remained determined to put on a show viewers, all watching online or on a streaming platform, would never forget.

“To everyone at home, stay strong,” Garth said from the stage. “You have flattened this curve so well. Don’t quit before it’s over.”

“We’re all in this together,” Trisha added.

“And together apart, and apart together,” Garth continued. “It’s cool too, ’cause country music, we’re always a family anyway, but this has made us stronger. And if there’s a blessing in the curse, it’s that we come out of this better as one, than we went in.”

During their show, Garth and Trisha also reflected on the significance of being a member of the hallowed organization.

“Thanks to the Opry for letting us be members of the greatest place on the planet,” he said.

“When you walk in this building, there’s such a history here,” Yearwood commented. “Then when you walk into this circle, there’s something magic that happens. I’m honored to be here with you.”

Earlier, Garth spoke out about being a member of the Grand Ole Opry, calling it one of the highest honors of his life and career.

“It’s been an honor,” Garth said, while on his Facebook Live show, Inside Studio G. “I’ve said it a million times and I’ll say it again: it was one of the greatest honors, if not the greatest honor, I’ve ever had bestowed upon me as a country music artist. I feel lucky to be a part of that family.”

Garth hinted that he might perform cover versions of other people’s hits during the show, which he and Trisha both did. The pair sang songs by Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris and George Strait, including their take on the George and Tammy Wynette duet, “Golden Ring.”

Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Trace Adkins and Dustin Lynch are all on the schedule for this Saturday, May 9. Information on streaming and online platforms can be found at Opry.com.
