Luke Bryan On Being On ‘American Idol’: ‘I Think It’s Our Best Season’

Luke Bryan is currently judging his sixth season on American Idol, joining Lionel Richie and Katy Perry in helping whittle down talented singers to see who will be crowned the next winner. With five previous seasons under his belt, the 46-year-old has high praise for all aspects of this season.

“I think it’s our best season,” Bryan hints to Audacy’s KMLE Country 107.9 (Phoenix), while appearing at Country Thunder. “The vibe, from the social streaming aspect to just the talent — I think it’s our best season. I judge it off of fan interactions online. You look at all the social media platforms, and it seems to be getting a big buzz. When the ABC executives are really, really happy, and Disney, it’s been I feel like our best year.”

Bryan has been on American Idol for all of the seasons it has aired on ABC. When asked if he sees his time on the reality TV talent show ending in the near future, as  Blake Shelton wraps up his final season on The Voice, the Georgia native admits he isn’t sure.

“I think Blake, obviously, he’s done The Voice many, many years,” Bryan reflects. “I think in this business, when you’re touring and doing TV, you’ve got to wake up and be motivated to do it. And I’m not sure when my timeframe is on anything. As long as I wake up and I’m motivated … Anytime you’re on stage, doing what you love. I really enjoy being part of American Idol, but I do miss a lot of time at home, so there’s always a balance. I think Blake probably came to the conclusion that he’s done it all on The Voice.

“That show really kickstarted NBC to have a competition like that certainly made Blake a household name too, because he would’ve never been able to do that with his music alone.,” he adds with a laugh.

It was Shelton who talked Bryan into doing Idol, something he admits he might not have done without Shelton’s encouragement.

“We’ve talked about our careers in those roles,” Bryan previously told Lon Helton on Country Countdown USA. “Blake was a big reason why I decided to do American Idol. Him stepping down from The Voice, I know he’s ready. He’s ready to move to the next chapter. It’s gotta be a good feeling. I wish him nothing but the best, and I thank him for paving the way for there to be a voice of country music on TV like that.”

The season finale of American Idol airs on Sunday, May 21 on ABC. Bryan, who will perform at CMA Fest, will enjoy a few weeks at home before he kicks off his Country On Tour on June 15. Bryan will be joined by a rotating list of opening acts on the road, including Chayce BeckhamTyler BradenAshley CookeJackson Dean, Jon Langston, Conner Smith, Alana Springsteen, Hailey Whitters, and DJ Rock.
