Megan Moroney Reflects on ‘Magical’ Grand Ole Opry Debut

Last month, Megan Moroney made her Grand Ole Opry debut, crossing an item off of her bucket list that the 25-year-old never even dared to dream about. Moroney, who shot to fame thanks to her viral “Tennessee Orange” hit, released last year, first visited the Grand Ole Opry in 2014. Even then, she never imagined that she would one day find herself on the same stage she watched artists like Carrie Underwood, Kacey Musgraves and Emmylou Harris perform on that night.

“I didn’t dream of being on the Opry stage because I thought I was going to grow up and be an accountant,” Moroney tells CMT. “I was up in the rafters, so maybe I dreamed of having a closer seat to the stage. I didn’t know that songwriting could be a job. Where I’m from, Douglasville, Georgia, you don’t do that.”

The rising star is by now used to performing in front of a crowd, but that did little to calm her anxiety when she stepped in the circle for the first time.

“I’ve never been more nervous in my life. … It was definitely as magical as everyone says it is,” Moroney says of the unforgettable night.

Understandably, Moroney was filled with emotion as she took the stage, with several family members from Georgia, including her parents, aunts and uncles, traveling to Nashville to witness her debut.

“I’m not usually a big crier,” Moroney said, adding that the waterworks began when she arrived for soundcheck earlier in the afternoon. “Then things happen. I’m like, ‘Why am I crying?’ But that was cool.”

Moroney’s unforgettable debut included flowers sent to her by Jamey Johnson, a chat with Vince Gill before she took the stage, and a lengthy talk with Jeannie Seely after her performance.

The songstress is continuing to make her mark in country music, especially with her forthcoming debut album, Lucky. The record, which follows her Pistol Shade of Roses EP, will be out on May 5.

“After we wrote the title track ‘Lucky,’ I knew I wanted it to be the name of my debut album,” Moroney says of the song, which she wrote with Casey Smith, Ben Williams and David “Messy” Mescon. “If you know anything about me and my story, a lot of things (both good and bad) happened to get me to where I am today, and I just feel very lucky. I couldn’t live out this dream without the support of my fans, family, and team. I can’t wait to bring these songs on the road with me this year and I hope everyone loves them as much as I do!”

Moroney was just nominated for two CMT Music Awards. She received nominations for both Breakthrough Female Video of the Year and CMT Digital-First Performance of the Year, both for “Tennessee Orange.”
