Michael W. Smith is Eager to Perform Drive-In Concert: ‘It is Odd and Wonderful’

It’s been a few months since Michael W. Smith has performed in a public setting, due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that will soon chance. The Christian music superstar will take the stage on Saturday night at the Williamson County Ag Expo Park in Franklin, located just outside of Nashville, for a drive-in concert.

“It is odd and wonderful all at the same time that we’re doing something that’s very unprecedented, caused by a pandemic,” Michael admitted to The Tennessean. “Four (thousand) or 5,000 people in their cars, pulling up. I mean, that’s crazy! I just think people are kind of excited about doing something that’s never been done before.”

Michael has been spending time at home with his family during the coronavirus pandemic, airing his weekly Worship Around the World series, and finding the freedom to be creative.

“I’ve been hunkered down with family and having a great time, and writing a lot,” he revealed. “I’ve just been really creative, not only with the concerts, but writing songs, and I’m working on some projects. I’m not bored, that’s for sure. It’s been a good thing. I’ve learned a lot about myself during all this. I know it’s been very difficult for a lot of people, especially people who’ve lost their jobs. But I do believe there’s some good that can come out it.”

The “Waymaker” singer will perform with his full band, and although he is expecting a large turnout, he says that has very little to do with who he is, and more to do with the way the world is right now.

“I think it could be honestly anybody (performing),” Michael acknowledged. “Everybody’s just itching to get out of the house and to go watch some live music, no matter who it is. But I think it’ll be a good night, and hopefully the weather will cooperate. We’re definitely gonna make some history. … I hope I can be that voice of calm, that people can pull out of there and go, ‘You know what? I’m gonna get through this.'”

The concert begins at 7:00 PM. The gates will open at 5:00 PM. Tickets are $40 per car, and are available via his website.
