Runaway June began with Wayne, Hannah Mulholland and Naomi Cooke. In 2020, Mulholland was replaced by Stovall, with Woodward coming in to replace Cooke’s position, after Cooke announced that she was leaving Runaway June to focus on a solo career.

“She was literally the first person that Jen sent to me,” Stovall told Everything Nash of adding Woodward. “That kind of scared us. because immediately I was like, ‘Oh my God.’ We felt like, ‘That’s her. She’s incredible.’ And then we started writing together and we didn’t tell Stevie that anything was going on. The writing chemistry was immediate. It really was, ‘Well, this just feels normal.’ And so we didn’t have to keep looking. We met our girl.”

For their previous releases, Cooke sang lead, with the other two singers providing background vocals. But with their new music, Wayne hints that all three of their voices will be heard.

“We’re actually spending time creating, and creating a sound,” Wayne revealed. “And it’s a vocal group this time. It’s actually a true vocal group. Natalie and I both love The Beach Boys. We’re just huge fans of The Beach Boys. I had come in, and they had worked on one of the songs. I was hearing all the parts that they did, and all the background parts. I’m like, ‘This is so cool.’ With all the stacked harmonies and different voices, they’re trading verses. It’s just really cool. All the voices are heard this time. It’s not like a lead and background singers. It’s a vocal group.”

As for Woodward, a rising singer-songwriter when Wayne and Stovall reached out to her, she couldn’t be more excited about the music they are getting ready to release, together.

“It’s incredible,” Woodward praised. “For me, it’s been one of the best journeys I’ve had creating music and it’s special. It feels special, and it feels like we’re putting our heart and soul into it because we are. I hope it translates, and I think it will. It’s just been an incredible journey.”
