Tyler Braden Shares the Story Behind ‘Try Losing One’ [EXCLUSIVE]

Tyler Braden enjoyed a No. 1 hit on SiriusXM The Highway earlier this year with “Try Losing One.” The song, from his debut What Do They Know EP, out last year, instantly became a hit when it was released to radio, even though that wasn’t the first version of the emotional tune.

“I actually wrote that song more than once technically,” Braden tells Everything Nash. “It’s just an idea that was worth revisiting. I went in with two good friends, Adam Wood and Brian Davis. I always say it’s the cliché meaning of the song, losing someone in a relationship. But it’s since kind of grown a new story. I’ve met people with the lyrics tattooed on their arms, feeling like just losing someone in the real sense. It shows how people can interpret different music in different ways. … We just sat down with that idea to play on the words like, ‘Oh, if you’ve got someone that you love, try losing one.'”

Braden has written plenty of songs over the years, but even he knew right away that “Try Losing One” was special.

“There are multiple things you’re aiming for on a write,” Braden says. “Get the melody right, get the feel right, the vibe of the music behind it. And I think we nailed it all on that. We were excited from the get-go.”

The Alabama native has been pleasantly surprised by the reaction to “Try Losing One,” which has taught him plenty about the power of a song.

“A song can mean different things to different people,” Braden says. “I think Dave Grohl said you could sing a song to 85,000 people and they’ll sing it back for 85,000 different reasons, and I thought that was beautiful.”

Braden has plenty of dates on the calendar for the next few months, including a series of shows opening for Mitchell Tenpenny. He also plans on releasing new music in 2023. Keep track of music and upcoming shows at TylerBraden.com.
