Watch Matt Stell Play 13 Different Roles in ‘If I Was a Bar’ Video (Exclusive)

Matt Stell is a singer, not an actor, but you wouldn’t know it by the video for his new track, “If I Was a Bar.” The 36-year-old had to get creative for the video, which was shot during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, so instead of hiring actors, he just took on each role himself.

“I think we got there at 7:00 and we left at 7:30,” Matt told Everything Nash of the video shoot, which was shot at Nashville’s Fleet Street Pub with only three crew members. “So it was all day, and it was a ton of fun. We just packed like I was going on a European vacation, to drive to a bar 10 minutes away. We got all this stuff out and we just tried to create these characters. Dustin Haney, the director, it was his brainchild. We just tried to take his idea and run with it. We had a lot of fun.”

Matt just released the “If I Was a Bar” video, but he is also enjoying a Top 25 hit with his current single, “Everywhere But On.” The song, which is the title track of his 2019 freshman record, is one of Matt’s favorites that he has ever written.

“I wrote that with Paul Sikes and Lance Miller,” Matt recalled. “I love those guys. Paul had a great idea when we came in. Usually when you’re writing a song, you kind of throw titles at each other. Paul had that title, and I said, ‘Man, I know the guy in this song. Let’s write this. And then we did; we wrote it pretty quickly and it came together. It was really one of my favorite songs. So when the label and folks decided that it would be the next single, I was really excited that they kind of saw what I saw in the song.”

Unlike the video for “If I Was a Bar,” in the video for “Everywhere But On,” the Arkansas native is in a luxurious high-rise in Nashville, with stunning views of the city.

“The place that we shopped it was at the Hyatt,” Matt said. “it was at the top floor of the tallest building in Tennessee. It’s a really cool spot to shoot a music video. We had a lot of fun; we had a great crew, had great people that we were working with. I really thought it came together, came together well.”

Matt is working on new music while he is off the road because of the pandemic, which he hopes to release later this year. Find updates at MattStell.com.
