Alexandra Kay Talks 'The Last,' Gives An Update On Her Next Album

Alexandra Kay‘s “The Last” is out now. The song, a sweet love story, is one that is already resonating with fans, and Kay, since the song is born from Kay’s own experience. Kay penned the song with Andrew DeRoberts and Jon Green, inspired by her relationship with her band member, Rocko Beal.

“I was talking about how I was in a new relationship, and I was very happy and am still in that relationship,” Kay tells Country Now. “And the one thing that always kind of stayed in the back of my mind is, I really hope that me having some of these life experiences before him doesn’t sour them for him at some point in life.

“And so that was kind of just the conversation we were having,” she continues. “And we just started talking about how we wanted to write a song about how it doesn’t matter anything that’s happened prior to this. It’s like life starts now with you and it doesn’t matter what happened first as long as I do that last with you.”

“The Last” is from Kay’s next album, her first on BBR Music Group/BMG Nashville. The record follows Kay’s vulnerable  All I’ve Ever Known record, out in 2023, which was largely about Kay’s processing her divorce from her husband, Indiana Touchette.

“One thing that I didn’t want you to do is fall in love with All I’ve Ever Known, that sound, and then come to my new record and it’s all pop and upbeat,” Kay explains. “And you don’t get anything that you love from the last record. And so, I really wrote with that in mind. And there’s a lot of transition songs.”

Kay’s next set of tunes might be different than All I’ve Ever Known, but the songs will still be very honest and authentic to her. She reveals one of the songs on the project is “Better Off,” a song that she has held onto for a while.

“I shared it with my label and they were like, ‘Oh yeah, absolutely,'” Kay recounts. “And so we’re just kind of going to tell the story from ‘Better Off’ kind of living in that land and then kind of trickle down to where we get to the happy stuff. So you’re definitely going to hear where I am now, where I’ve been in some transition songs over the last two years too.”

As for “The Last,” Kay performs the song each night with Beal, letting their sweet love story live out on stage.

“We perform it together every night acoustic, and it’s a real moment. It’s wonderful,” Kay says, adding that it feels very much like a ful-circle moment for her.

“It feels great,” boasts the singer. “On my last album, there’s a song called ‘Painted Him Perfect.’ And in that song it says, ‘I’d sing his praises on every stage, and he just had to mention he hates the attention.’ And so, it feels really cool in my life to be up there with somebody that I can just love so loudly, and he’s not embarrassed by that, and he loves me so loudly and so proudly, and it’s just a really healthy scenario. It feels amazing.”

Kay is currently headlining her own UK Tour. She will join Brad Paisley for select dates this year on his Truck Still Works Tour. Find “The Last” and all of Kay’s music and upcoming shows at AlexandraKayOfficial.com.
