Gary Allan is mourning the loss of his mother. Allan announces on social media that his mother, Mary Herzberg, passed away on Sunday, August 24.
“Mary was so much more than a supportive mother—she was Gary’s friend, confidant, biggest critic, biggest fan, his original fan club president, and most importantly, his mom,” a statement reads on Allan’s Facebook page. “She championed him not only in his career but also in every part of his life. If you had the privilege of meeting Mary, whether in person or online, you know the depth of her pride and love for Gary and her entire family. Her warmth, encouragement, and unwavering spirit touched all who knew her.
“Mary’s husband, Harley Herzberg, passed in September 2008,” the statement continues. “Before his passing, they had been married for 51 years. Please keep Gary, his siblings Tammy and Greg, and the entire Herzberg family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We will miss you dearly, Mama Mary.”
It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of Gary’s mom, Mary Herzberg, who passed away yesterday.

Gary Allan’s Country Music Career
Allan’s debut Used Heart for Sale album was released in 1996. The record included his first Top 10 single, “Her Man.” Allan went on to release nine more records on a major label, including Ruthless, his last on MCA Nashville, out in 2021. Allan has had numerous hit singles spanning more than 20 years, including “Man to Man,” “Tough Little Boys,” “Nothing on But the Radio” and “Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain,” which were all No. 1 hits for Allan.
Allan also spends a lot of time on the road. For Allan, it’s important to his career to remain in front of his fans.
“I try to do the hits, the fan favorites that may not have been singles, and then sprinkle in some new songs,” Allan tells The Music Room. “We try to change it up every so often, but still, keep that format.”
Gary Allan Finds Love
In 2024, Allan married his longtime girlfriend, Mary Martin, joined only by an officiant and a photographer.
“We wanted something low-key that was representative of some of our favorite times together,” Allan tells People. “We had a private ceremony close to home, then ended the day with dinner and drinks with a few close friends.”
Allan proposed to Martin in December of 2021, at Cheekwood in Nashville
“Molly and I had been trying to find the right time and right spot to get married, and we just decided the time was now,” Allan says. “We just didn’t want to keep waiting … We may still do a bigger celebration later on, but for now we are happy to be husband and wife.”
