Alexandra Kay Celebrates Career Milestone With 10 Million Streams

Alexandra Kay is celebrating a massive career milestone. The Illinois native has two songs, both her 2021 “How Do We Go” single and her recent “Best Worst Ex” track, which each achieved 10 million streams on Spotify. It’s an impressive feat for any artist, let alone one who is independent, without the support of a record label.

“You guys have streamed these songs 10 million times,” Kay shares on social media. “Let me repeat that. YOU have clicked from my profile and streamed these songs on Spotify. These songs aren’t playlisted. That is WILD. Thank you for the support. Being an independent artist is so much fun because of you.”

Later, Kay added that she was continuing to feel thankful for how her career has been growing, and the people who have supported her over the years.

“I feel so incredibly grateful today,” Kay tweeted. “The people in my life are a true blessing, the opportunities me and my team are being presented with are gifts from God. I’m working on not taking a single day for granted and soaking in how truly beautiful my life is.”

The rising star’s career took off after she began posting covers of country classics on TikTok, never imagining that her voice would resonate with so many people, including Tim McGraw, who invited her on his tour.

“I started doing this thing in the morning on TikTok, where I would make myself a cup of coffee, just like everybody does, and I always am blaring ’90s country in the morning,” Kay revealed on Pensacola, Florida’s Cat Country 98.7 radio station.

Kay would begin her day by asking Alexa to play country music from that era, her favorite, which inspired her to start singing the songs made famous by artists she wanted to emulate.

“One day, I slid in and was singing a Jo Dee Messina song, and I had a big coffee, like in a mason jar, and somebody commented and said, ‘How do you make your coffee?’ Kay recalled. “I replied, and I made it in front of them, and I sang a song by The Chicks, and it blew up. I said, ‘Okay, maybe we’ll try this again.’ I did it the next day, and it was crazy. It was like every single video I did with it, for days, multiple times a day, it was like three million, four million, five million, six million, ten million, 12 million, 15 million [views]. It was crazy. It was nuts. It was a whirlwind, for sure. I think I gained like a million followers in a week.”

Kay has posted plenty of country covers, as well as a lot of her own music, but she isn’t opposed to music from other genres as well. She just put her own spin on Blink-182’s 1997 hit, “Dammit,” which landed in the Top 10 on iTunes.

Kay is taking the first part of 2022 off to work on her debut solo album. Find music and tour dates at AlexandraKayOfficial.com.
