Alexandra Kay Puts Her Own Spin On a Blink-182 Classic [LISTEN]

Alexandra Kay has made a name for herself by covering some of country music’s biggest stars, including George Strait, Dolly Parton, Tim McGraw, Jo Dee Messina and more. But the rising star recently put her own twist on a rock song, with Blink-182’s 1997 hit, “Dammit,” swapping the group’s high-energy original version into an emotional break-up tune.

“From a viral tiktok cover … to recording mixing mastering and releasing in a week’s time,” Kay shared on social media when the song was released. “So happy our sad girl version of ‘DAMMIT’ by Blink-182 is out into the world.”

Kay also praised those who made her vision for “Dammit” quickly come to life, before inviting her loyal — and growing — fanbase to let her know how they really felt about the song.

“Listen to ‘DAMMIT’ on repeat and whether you love it or hate it LET ME KNOW!” she says. “I will love you either way.”

Kay later admitted that, although the song made it into the Top 10 on iTunes, not everyone was a fan of her take on Blink-182’s song — not that she cared much.

“I don’t think I’ve ever received more backlash on a song I’ve released.. haha,” Kay tweeted. “Whether you love it or hate it I’m just glad you’re listening. ‘DAMMIT’  is out now!”

Kay might have risen in popularity — and scored an opening slot on the McGraw Tour 2022 — thanks to her covers of other people’s hits, but she is also a talented songwriter as well. The Illinois native has released several original songs, including “Skip This Part,” “Backroad Therapy,” “That’s What Love Is,” and more. Kay is continuing to write, and take time off of the road, in the first part of 2023, as she readies her debut solo album.

“It’s a product of the last year, but I definitely still have a few more songs before it’s done, and I just wanna make sure it’s perfect,” Kay told Music Mayhem of her new set of tunes. “It’s my first full-length project, and I wanna make sure that I give my fans something that they listen to and they know it’s me as soon as it starts spinning. And so I just want them to be as proud of it as I will be.”
