Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, appeared in one of the most talked about Super Bowl commercials, for T-Mobile. The ad, which also included former The Voice coach, Adam Levine, earned rave reviews from fans, as well as apparently all of Shelton’s friends.
“Of all the things that I’ve been fortunate enough to have happen in my life, I don’t know that my phone has ever erupted — I mean my phone was smoking,” Shelton told Entertainment Weekly, recalling the response after the ad aired. “You realize, ‘Oh my God, nobody has ever really watched me win an award.’ I know that now. But everybody watches the Super Bowl. Now it’s confirmed: I know every contact in my phone was watching that game.”
Shelton and Stefani have been very public about their relationship, which is why they both agreed to do the humorous commercial.
“It was funny,” Shelton admitted. “We had a blast. When I read the script, I thought it was a great idea. I thought it was so funny. Because people still don’t really understand why she’s with me. And fair enough, right? So I loved being able to spin that out.”
Shelton and Stefani met on The Voice, and fell for each other while they were in the middle of their own divorces. Although together for more than five years, and planning to get married later this year, they might not even be together if they had listened to the advice of their good friend, and host of The Voice, Carson Daly.
I said, ‘You guys, pump the brakes. This is not good. This is not going to work,’” Daly recalled to Stefani on the Today Show. “And I looked at Gwen, and I said, ‘You’re much, much too good for this guy. You’re smart. You’re intelligent. You’re one of my oldest friends. And then there’s Blake.'”
Thankfully, Stefani didn’t listen to Daly, and is still just as smitten with Shelton as the early days of their relationship.
“What don’t I love about Blake, and what don’t we all love about Blake?” Stefani gushed. “He’s just such a good guy. He’s one of the most generous human beings and down-to-earth. It almost sounds generic, but it’s just so true. He’s so gifted and so unique and talented and he really just is my best friend. I feel just so excited that I have someone in my life that now I have a chance at happiness for a long time to come.
“It’s just a blessing, the whole thing, and it is a miracle,” she continued. “It’s weird how things happen, and you just don’t see things that are right around the corner after such devastation.”
