Carrie Underwood Covers Vince Gill’s ‘Go Rest High On That Mountain [WATCH]

Several artists paid musical tribute to Vince Gill, as part of the CMT Giants: Vince Gill TV special, including Carrie Underwood. Underwood honored Gill by performing one of his most noteworthy songs, “Go Rest High On That Mountain.”

“He’s an Okie boy, and I’m from Oklahoma,” Underwood told CMT ahead of her performance. “I feel like getting to grow up and see him and other artists like him that were from a little bit down the road go on to live the dream that I wanted to someday maybe have was just super inspiring. He’s got obviously an incredible voice and just some of the most memorable songs in this era of country music. It’s just an honor to get to be here.”

Underwood added the third verse to “Go Rest High On That Mountain,” which Gill revealed last year.

“Not too long ago, about a year so ago, as I listened to that song, it always felt incomplete,” Gill shared on Apple Music Country’s I Miss…90s Country Radio with Nick Hoffman. “I didn’t feel like the song, as a songwriter, buttoned up and ended and finished the story. It told a nice story, but it never finished it. And so I wrote a third verse, and I haven’t recorded it yet, but I’d like to, just to have a version out there with the third verse. The third verse is, ‘You’re safely home. In the arms of Jesus, eternal life my brother’s found. The day will come I know I’ll see him in that sacred place on that holy ground.’”

Gill admits he was blown away by the star-studded musical tribute, which also included performances by  Ricky Skaggs, Chris Stapleton, Cody Johnson, Wendy Moten, Brad Paisley and Sting, among others.

“I’m just overwhelmed by this night,” Gill said of the honor. “I’m not crazy about attention. I’m not afraid of it, but I’m just not that crazy about it. To hear all of these gifted people sing these songs has just been the greatest blessing ever.”

Gill also gave an update on his wife, Amy Grant, who was absent from the CMT Giants taping, while she continues to recover from her bike accident.

“She’s doing great,” her husband shared. “My wife had a really bad bike wreck about a month ago, and was unconscious for about ten or 15 minutes. She had a few complications, but she’s home, resting, and they just say stillness and rest, and she’s gonna be just fine. She’ll be back out.”

Gill is currently touring with the Eagles. His annual Christmas at the Ryman residency with Grant is scheduled to begin on December 12. Find tour dates here.
