Cody Johnson Reflects on ‘Absolute Honor’ of 4 CMA Awards Nods

Cody Johnson is blown away by his four CMA Awards nominations. The 35-year-old, who only received one other CMA Awards nod, for New Artist of the Year in 2019, is nominated again for New Artist of the Year, along with Single of the Year and Video of the Year, for “‘Til You Can’t,” as well as Male Vocalist of the Year.

“Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve watched my heroes accept CMA awards; to be nominated for four is an absolute honor!” Johnson says. “I stand for a unique brand of authentic country music, and to see it being recognized on such a huge platform makes all the years of hard work worth it!”

Johnson also celebrated the milestone on social media,

“‘Til You Can’t,” from Johnson’s 2021 Human: The Double Album, also became Johnson’s first No. 1 hit.  Although he didn’t write the tune, which was instead written by Matthew J. Rogers and Ben Stennis, he knew right away the song was powerful.

“We were like, ’This needs to be a message,’” Johnson said, via CMT, of the song. “If you’ve got a chance, take the chance. Go out and chase your dreams until you can’t. Every one of us, you try not to think about it every day, but we all have an expiration date. From now until that expiration date, it’s about chase your dreams, take your chance, tell people you love that you love them. It turned into this happy, anthemic experience.”

Johnson knew “‘Til You Can’t” was an important song for him, but even he admits he could have never predicted how much of an impact the song would have.

“I’m so excited to see the ripples that this song has created. “Til You Can’t” has such a positive message, and it’s so much fun to sing!” Johnson told Billboard.  “After playing music for almost 15 years, I’m still taken back by the power of a good country song;”

Johnson might be experiencing his first multiple CMA Awards nominations, but his career has already been moving full-speed ahead. The former prison guard tied a record earlier this year, held by George Strait and Garth Brooks, by selling out the opening night of RodeoHouston, drawing more than 70,500 fans to see him perform.
