Luke Combs’ ‘Gettin’ Old’ Album Was Inspired By Changes In His Own Life

Luke Combs‘ new album, Gettin’ Old, will be out on March 24. The 18-track record, which for the first time includes three songs he didn’t write, was inspired while he was working on Growin’ Up, the record’s predecessor that came out last June.

“All the songs that were on Growin’ Up, and the songs that are now on this one, were all recorded in the same era,” Combs explains to his record label. “And what I mean by that is, we were in the studio a bunch, and recording what was then going to be my third album. I began to compile this list of songs; we recorded 40 probably, over two years, pretty much to completion, almost to mixing and mastering level.

“And as I began to compile the tracklist of what was going to be Growin’ Up, I was having so much trouble coming up with this tracklist because I was like, these two sets of songs are so l markedly different from each other,” he adds.

It was while trying to figure out what songs to make it onto Growin’ Up that Combs had the idea to combine the two, thanks to the song, “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old” from this forthcoming new album. The line, “In the middle of growin’ up, and gettin’ old,” is what ultimately sparked the idea for two back-to-back albums.

[It’s] really, where I feel like I am,” Combs explains. “I’m not getting old, but I’m not growing up anymore. I’m a dad now. I’ve reached a pretty awesome level of success in my career. It’s just this crazy juxtaposition. That’s where I feel like I am. When I’m home, I’m changing diapers, and when I’m not home, I’m onstage performing in front of thousands of people. It’s just so crazy different. And that’s where a lot of these songs kind of came from, is that headspace of just feeling that way.”

Not only has Combs’ personal life changed, but how he makes music has changed as well. The 33-year-old is a lot different, in every way, than he was when his debut single, “Hurricane,” came out in 2016.

“I realized my songwriting and what I want to do sonically in the studio has changed,” Combs concedes. “But all these songs kind of existed at the same time. And so I wanted to, showcase that there is this market difference of where my music has been and where it maybe is going. And this was, to me, the best way of doing that.”

Combs will embark on his World Tour in March 25 in Arlington, Texas, and will play in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and more, before wrapping up on October 19 in the UK. Riley GreenLainey Wilson, Flatland Cavalry and Brent Cobb will serve as the opening acts for some dates, with Cody Johnson and Lane Pittman taking over opening act duties for some of the overseas dates as well.
