Luke Combs Makes History With ‘Going, Going, Gone’

Luke Combs has once again made history. The 33-year-old just scored his 15th consecutive No. 1 hit, with “Going, Going, Gone.” The song’s success marks the first time an artist at country radio has had a streak of chart-topping singles since their debut, with all of Combs’ songs hitting No. 1 since his first single, “Hurricane,” which was released in 2016.

Combs wrote “Going, Going, Gone” with Ray Fulcher and James McNair, although he admits he wasn’t at all certain that the song would follow the precedent set by his previous singles.

“I’ve always loved this song, and I’ve always believed in it since we wrote it,” Combs said of the track, while backstage at the 2023 Grammy Awards.  “It’s a little bit different than the things that we’ve done in the past, so I was kind of nervous about putting this song out and seeing what people’s reactions to it would be, just because it is a little bit left of center of what I usually do, but I think it’s a perfect fit for this show.

“And I’m excited for a lot of people who’ve maybe never heard of me or listened to me before, to kind of get a chance to at least hear me and go, ‘Oh, this guy’s not so bad!’” he added.

Combs’ Gettin’ Old album will be out on March 24. The record includes “Love You Anyway,” a song he released last month, which was inspired by his wife, Nicole, as well as one of his previous hits.

“Valentine’s Day 2020. I was playing a show and had dedicated ‘Beautiful Crazy’ to Nicole and said, ‘If you’re in here (the arena), I love you. If not, you know I do anyway,’” Combs shared on social media. “Unknown to me, my buddy Dan wrote down ‘Love You Anyway’ as a title in his phone after hearing that, then he told me the story later that month when he and I were writing with my good friend Ray Fulcher.

“We loved the idea as a title and decided to write about loving someone so much that even if you knew from the beginning they were going to break your heart, you’d love them anyway,” he continued. “It came off very poetic and we wanted to find the words that could really give meaning to what we were trying to say, but as we say in the song, we didn’t know if there were deep enough words made for that.”

Combs will embark on his World Tour in March 25 in Arlington, Texas, and will play in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and more, before wrapping up on October 19 in the UK. Riley GreenLainey Wilson, Flatland Cavalry and Brent Cobb will serve as the opening acts for some dates, with Cody Johnson and Lane Pittman taking over opening act duties for some of the overseas dates as well.
