Runaway June Returns Stronger With ‘Broken Hearts (Do Broken Things)’ [LISTEN]

Runaway June‘s new single, “Broken Hearts (Do Broken Things)” is out! The song is the first release with the addition of Stevie Woodward, who replaced Naomi Cooke as the lead singer earlier this year.

“I just feel like it’s just a girl anthem and a guy anthem,” Wayne shared with Everything Nash and other outlets during a virtual media event. “We’ve all gotten our hearts broken and we’ve all done some stupid things when your heart’s broken. I just feel like none of us take ourselves too seriously and we wanna put out music that’s real and authentic.

“And all of us have been in that situation,” she continued. “If it can help someone else and if someone else relates to it or is going through it at the time, that’s the whole point of music. So I think it’s just a fun breakup song.”

“Broken Hearts (Do Broken Things)” is a fiery song that also is the launchpad for a new musical chapter for Runaway June as well.

“I feel like ‘Broken Hearts’ is the song that we experimented the most with musically from the demo to what it is now,” Wayne said. “We’ve really stretched the song musically, I feel like. And so, it’s kind of a glimpse into what the next songs are going to be like.”

Although “Broken Hearts (Do Broken Things)” was just released, Runaway June has already seen the crowd react strongly to the uptempo tune.

“This song, immediately, the first time we played it, we started seeing the girl groups coming together,” Stovall shared. “Kiind of the way that we do when we start singing it, and just singing it at the top of their lungs, even though they didn’t know the lyrics. It was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is the feeling we get from it, so I’m so glad y’all get it too,’”

Runaway June previously said that, with the addition of Woodward, they planned on featuring all three of their voices more than they have in the past. While Wayne was on maternity leave, Woodward and Stovall began working on their new music, creating a unique sound that is unlike anything Runaway June has done previously.

“We’re actually spending time creating, and creating a sound,” Wayne told Everything Nash. “And it’s a vocal group this time. It’s actually a true vocal group. Natalie and I both love The Beach Boys. We’re just huge fans of The Beach Boys. I had come in, and they had worked on one of the songs. I was hearing all the parts that they did, and all the background parts. I’m like, ‘This is so cool.’ With all the stacked harmonies and different voices, they’re trading verses. It’s just really cool. All the voices are heard this time. It’s not like a lead and background singers. It’s a vocal group.”

As for Woodward, who was a solo artist before joining Runaway June, being part of the group is already a dream come true.

“It’s incredible,” Woodward said. “For me, it’s been one of the best journeys I’ve had creating music and it’s special. It feels special, and it feels like we’re putting our heart and soul into it because we are. I hope it translates, and I think it will. It’s just been an incredible journey.”
