Scotty McCreery Says There Is a Song for Everybody on Diverse New Album

Scotty McCreery‘s “Cab In A Solo,” the debut single from his next album, is in the Top 30, and climbing. The heartbreak tune is the first taste of what the project will sound like, although McCreery admits there might be a few surprises as well.

“I thought ‘Cab In A Solo’ was going to be a great first taste for folks, if they’re looking forward to the album, what the album’s going to be like,” McCreery shared at a recent media event. “To be honest, there’s stuff on this record that’s countrier than ‘Cab In A Solo,’ I would say. We dove right in on this sound and the storytelling and songwriting, in a bunch of different directions. I feel like there’s a song on this record for everybody. It’s a good first taste I would say, to be indicative of what the album’s going to be.”

Perhaps surprisingly, for his fifth studio album, the 30-year-old‘s biggest criteria was just to listen to his heart when choosing which songs would, and would not, make it onto the project.

“To be honest, it just has to feel right,” McCreery explained. “I try to do this old-school. I try to look at the project as a whole, and say, ‘Well, I love this song, but will it fit this record? Maybe we’ll cut it in two years.’ There are a couple of songs on this record that we wrote a couple of years ago that didn’t fit Same Truck, but I feel like will fit this record.

“But again, not having a cut-and-dry formula … we decided in the studio,” he added. “I was like, ‘All right, let’s cut this one.’ It just felt right in the moment. I try to go by feel, a lot of it, and instinct. Just follow the heart.”

At least one song on the next set of tunes will have to do with his son, Avery, who turned one in October.

“The day he was born, or maybe it was the day after, I put a post up of him on Instagram,” McCreery shared. “I think all I said was, ‘I’ve never known a love like this’ kind of thing. The song follows that thought process.”

McCreery has yet to announce a title or release date for his forthcoming album, but he does say he is eager to be able to share it with the rest of the world.

“Maybe more so than any other record, I’m just excited for folks to hear what we’ve been up to,” McCreery said. “I hope the people enjoy it.”

McCreery already teased another song, “Slow Dance,” from the record as well, this one showing off his deep bass voice.

“So I’ve had a lot of folks ask over the years, they say, ‘Scotty, you’ve got this deep voice. Why haven’t you used it on one of your songs, or on one of your records?’ McCreery said on social media. “I thought about that, and wanted to write a song for you all that have asked that question. I like this song a lot. It’s called ‘Slow Dance.’ I hope you all do too.”

McCreery will kick off his Cab In A Solo Tour on January 26. Find music and tour dates at ScottyMcCreery.com.
