Tracy Lawrence Wants Another Artist To Record This ‘Timeless’ Hit

Tracy Lawrence has had a lot of hits throughout his career, which has spanned more than 30 years. Still, there’s one song that he feels is among his best, and now thinks someone else should record a new version of it, instead of him.

“I don’t really know who it would be [to sing it], but I think ‘Time Marches On’ would be a great song to remake,” Lawrence says (via Taste of Country).

The song, the title track of Lawrence’s 1996 sophomore album, was written by Bobby Braddock. Still, it was a message that resonated with Lawrence, more than any of his other songs.

“I think it’s timeless. I think it’s probably the best lyric I ever did,” Lawrence shares. “You know, somebody’s gotta feel it. It’s gotta be the right song at the right time. But I think there are some things in there that somebody could have another hit on.”

The 55-year-old was one of the reigning hitmakers in the ’90s, a decade that forever shaped country music. While trends and sounds have moved on since then, the genre is now seeing a resurgence of the popular era, one the 55-year-old is proud to have been a part of.

“I look at it like the way my generation views classic rock ‘n’ roll, that it has become the staple that everybody goes back to,” Lawrence says.

Lawrence kicked off 2023 with a new lease on life, after recovering from a scary, but necessary, surgery over the holidays.

“I came into this new year wanting to start again,” Lawrence told Everything Nash earlier this year. “I had surgery over the holidays, I had surgery on my neck, so I’ve been kind of out of it. I had surgery done in December, so I’ve been down for a while. It’s one of the procedures where they go through the front of your throat and your neck. They had to move the vocal cords out of the way. So I’m just now getting my singing voice back. It was a little bit scary, which is why I put it off for so long. So hopefully I’m gonna be able to start writing in the very near future.”

Lawrence released the three-album, 30-track Hindsight 2020 collection in 2021 and 2022, but hints more new music will be coming from him in the near future, amid his other business ventures.

“The last couple of years, we’ve been riding off of my 30th anniversary,” Lawrence shares. “I dropped three albums in one year and we coasted on thast. But I’m due back in the studio very soon. I managed my time to get it all done. I’m doing a radio show every couple of weeks I’m in 170-something markets around the country that I have to tape radio shows for. Plus I’ve got five or six to tape this week.”

Lawrence’s latest album, Live at Billy Bob’s Texas, is out now. Find all of  Lawrence’s music and upcoming shows, at TracyLawrence.com.
