Tyler Hubbard‘s “Me For Me ” is out now. The tune, which Hubbard wrote with Thomas Rhett and Russell Dickerson, is from his forthcoming self-titled debut album as a solo artist, and a way to let his fans get to know him — and his wife Hayley — a little bit more.
“What I want fans to take away from ‘Me For Me’ is ultimately, I hope they get to know me a little bit more,” Hubbard tells his record label. “It’s very literal. It’s very much who I am and who I was, and also the beauty of finding the right person who loves you for you. I remember finding that with my wife Hayley, and just almost being surprised and shocked that she didn’t expect me to change this, change that. I had had previous relationships that were kind of that way.”
When Hubbard started dating Hayley, he had no idea that the relationship would be as strong as it is, after more than seven years of marriage.
“I met her, and I just thought, I’m just gonna keep doing what I’m doing and eventually she’s gonna ask me to change and tweak some things, if you will, but she never did,” Hubbard shares. “And I just thought that was really special, and I always felt like she really just loved me for me. So that’s kind of the heart behind the song and I hope that’s what the fans take away.”
This isn’t the only song Hubbard wrote about Hayley for his new record. His debut single, “5 Foot 9,” which also became his first No. 1 hit as a solo artist, was also written about her, even if he did get one important detail wrong.
“I’ve got to be honest. I have a confession. I missed it by an inch,” Hubbard told Everything Nash and other outlets during a virtual media event. “She’s actually 5 foot 10 inches. I went home at night and said, ‘Babe, remind me again how tall you are exactly. You’re about 5 foo 9?’ She said ‘5 foot 10 inches.’ And I said, ‘Well, here’s a new song I wrote today. I’m sorry I cut you short by an inch, but I hope you like it.’”
