Tim McGraw On ‘Song For America’: ‘This Is the Time to Celebrate Our Country’

Tim McGraw is opening up about his new song, “Song For America,” out now. Written by Tom Douglas and JT Harding, the father of three released it ahead of the upcoming Independence Day celebration.

“It’s the perfect song for America’s 250th birthday,” McGraw says. “What I loved about it is, it’s just full of nostalgia, and it’s full of sort of this Rockwellian painting of America. I didn’t want anything to be political or be objective, or anything that causes any controversy with this song. Because this is the time to celebrate all of us.

“And this is the time to celebrate our country,” he adds. “Time to celebrate our heritage and who we are and where we came from, and why we’re all here. So I thought the song said all those things perfectly.”

“Song For America” says in part, “Tears rain in Arlington for soldiers young and brave / White crosses on a field of green above Old Glory waves. This is a song for America / 9/11 scars and freedom screams / This is a song for America / Dashboard drummers / Girls of summer / And six-pack dreams.”

What Tim McGraw Says About Releasing New Music

When McGraw released “Song For America,” he also released “Pawn Shop Guitar,” the latter the title track of his next record.

“This is the first new music I’ve put out in over a year. It’s no secret that over the last few years I got sidelined with back and knee issues,” McGraw said at the time. “That time was challenging on so many levels, but one of the positive things that came out of it, aside from physically being back to 100 percent, was that it gave me time to reflect on my life and to write songs. I was able to really dig into some personal stories in those songs for the first time.”

McGraw wrote “Pawn Shop Guitar” with Douglas, a song that is at least partially about McGraw’s own life.

“My new song, ‘Pawn Shop Guitar’ is really based pretty loosely on me, pawning my high school ring for a guitar, long before I came to Nashville,” McGraw explains. “It captures the spirit of being an artist, and believing that music is hope.”

Tim McGraw To Be Inducted Into the Country Music Hall of Fame

2026 is shaping up to be a big year for McGraw. In addition to releasing more music, the Louisiana native will also be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame later this year, along with songwriter Paul Overstreet and bluegrass pioneers, The Stanley Brothers.

“Well, it’s the highest honor you can get,” McGraw tells Country Now. “I think other than marrying my wife and having our three daughters, nothing beats this. I mean, this is something that I don’t even think you dare to dream about. And you certainly don’t think it’s going to … Even ten years ago, I never thought that this would happen, certainly not in my lifetime.”
