Alexandra Kay Releases Liberating ‘Backroad Therapy’ [LISTEN]

Alexandra Kay‘s “Backroad Therapy” is out! The Illinois native released her new single, the follow-up to “Skip This Part,” continuing her prowess in articulating hard feelings around breakups and lost love.

“Backroad Therapy is out now!” Kay shared on social media. “Thank you to everyone who made this possible. I got to have MY BAND play on this record and it was so special. This song has been my baby for two years and I am overjoyed to get to share it with you! Can’t wait to hear what you think.”

Kay teased the song earlier this week, saying “The next time you want to drive to his house at 3:00 in the morning, don’t. Try this instead.”

The song, which says in part, “It’s 2:00 on the dot and you text me / Where you at / You don’t know I’m already 30 miles outta town / And I don’t think I’m turning around / ‘Cause Jo Dee’s singing ‘Bye Bye, catch you later / Keep that lead foot on the accelerator / But I still hear your voice echo in my head / So I turn it up to ten / And drive until I’m over it,” is a nod to Kay’s love of ’90s country music. The rising star got her now-successful start in country music by performing covers of country songs on TikTok, including covers of Jo Dee Messina‘s “I’m Alright” and “Heads Carolina, Tails California” earlier this year.

Kay will join two ’90s country music hitmakers soon, when she serves as the opening act for  Clay Walker and Tracy Lawrence for a series of shows in November. Kay also opened for them earlier this year, earning high praise from Walker.

“She is such a kind person. It’s great to see that with a new artist,” Walker told Everything Nash, sharing how thoughtful Kay is, even off the stage. “After we had done some shows together, she sent Tracy a bottle of whiskey, and sent me a bottle of wine. It was just really super kind, super unexpected. I call that class. She’s got a lot of class.”

Kay will follow-up her run with Walker an Lawrence by making her official Grand Ole Opry debut on November 19. Kay shared a video of her parents giving her the surprising news.

“It’s really real. That’s crazy,” a tearful Kay said upon learning the news. “I am so happy … I really thought I wasn’t going to get to do that, ever.”
