Dan + Shay’s Shay Mooney Reveals Reason For 50-Pound Weight Loss

There’s a little less of Dan + Shay‘s Shay Mooney, more than 50 pounds less, to be exact. The father of two, with another one on the way, reveals he went on a weight loss journey earlier this year, mostly for himself.

“I had this moment where I was just not feeling healthy,” Mooney says on the Today Show. “It wasn’t necessarily for my appearance, but it was to feel healthy. And I’m down about 53 or 54 pounds.

Mooney also spoke out about his weight loss on Instagram, after fans noticed his slimmer figure.

“Thank you guys so much for all your kind words about me looking healthy,” Mooney said. “Really means a lot. Been a little over 5 months I believe and I’m down almost 50 lbs. For those asking: Eating clean/not drinking alcohol and walking 7 miles a day. And some weights. That’s it! I completely changed my lifestyle and I’ve never felt better physically, mentally, and spiritually.”

Dan + Shay, who recently won the American Music Award for Favorite Country Duo or Group — for the fourth year in a row — will also perform as part of CMA Country Christmas, airing on Thursday, December 9, at 9:00 PM ET on ABC. The duo has released several Christmas songs over the years, including “Take Me Home For Christmas,” “Officially Christmas,” their newly-released “Holiday Party” and more — and hint there might be an official Christmas album in the works as well.

“I’m sure our fans are wondering that,” Mooney said. “I feel like at this point we’ve gathered enough songs to just be an album, and I think that’s eventually what’s going to happen. We’re gonna have like 13 songs, and they’re going to be like, ‘So, was that the album?’ … We’re definitely working on something coming up soon.”

Dan + Shay currently have a Top 40 hit, with their single, “You,” from their latest  Good Things  album.

“I think the original hook was ‘You and Only You,’ which was really cool, and something to write down in the phone, as like, ‘Hey, what about that title?’” Smyers explained on The Bobby Bones Show. “We threw that out, and we didn’t reinvent the wheel. Dan + Shay, we do love songs. That’s kind of what we do. We’ve been fortunate enough to have a bunch of songs that have become people’s wedding songs. ‘Speechless,’ ‘From the Ground Up,’ that kind of thing. That’s just what works for us. That’s kind of our lane. That’s what we do.”
