Dolly Parton Wrote Her First Novel, ‘Run, Rose, Run,’ With James Patterson

Add novel author to Dolly Parton‘s extensive list of accomplishments. The 75-year-old reveals she has written her first novel, Run, Rose Run, with acclaimed author, James Patterson. Run, Rose, Run, will be published by Little, Brown and Company on March 7, 2022. Parton will also drop an album of the same name, featuring 12 original songs, on the book’s release date.

“I cannot be more excited about the release of my very first novel Run, Rose, Run with the great James Patterson. I also have a new album to go along with the book,” Parton tells People in a statement. “All new songs were written based on the characters and situations in the book. I hope you enjoy the book and the songs as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it all together!”

Run, Rose, Run is the story of a woman moving to Nashville, with dreams of becoming a famous singer.

“The source of her heart-wrenching songs is a brutal secret she has done everything to hide,” a press release announces. “But the past she has fled is reaching out to control her future — even if it means destroying everything she has worked for.”

The Country Music Hall of Fame member drew on her extensive experience in the music business to write Run, Rose, Run with Patterson.

“It’s been an honor — and a hell of a lot of fun — to work with the inimitable Dolly Parton, whom I’ve long admired for her music, her storytelling, and her enormous generosity,” Patterson says. “The mind-blowing thing about this project is that reading the novel is enhanced by listening to the album and vice versa. It’s a really unique experience that I know readers (and listeners) will love.”

Parton, who calls her philanthropic Imagination Library among her greatest achievements, teased on social media earlier this week that she wanted to write a book.

“The seeds of dreams are often found in books, and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world,” Parton said. “I dream of writing my own novel one day.”

The album will be released on Parton’s Butterfly Records, along with another label, which has yet to be announced. Pre-order Run, Rose, Run here.
