Luke Bryan Celebrates His 30th No. 1 Hit With ‘Country On’

The hits keep coming for Luke Bryan — literally. The 46-year-old is celebrating his 30th No. 1 hit with “Country On.” The song, written by Mark Nesler, David Frasier, Mitch Oglesby, and Styles Haury, is from Bryan’s new album.

“What I love about that song is it’s got a lot of the same feelings of an Alabama song, like ‘Forty Hour Week (For a Livin’)’ or ‘Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler),'” Bryan tells MusicRow of “Country On.” “That song just speaks to the hardworking Americans out there. In my opinion, a lot of the people that I reference in that song make the world go around.

“I’ve never really done a song that had patriotic aspects to it,” he shares. “When we say, ‘Hey, hey, USA. We ain’t seen our better days,’ that’s a come-together moment. I couldn’t have hand-picked a better 30th.”

The Georgia native released “Country On” in July, mostly because he wanted a summer anthem while he was on his Raised Up Right Tour.

“We were in the studio, and we’ve been in the studio,” Bryan shared on Apple Music’s Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen. “We’ve got about eight or nine songs recorded and we just have been working for the past couple of months. We had kind of thought that we were going to come with something new in the latter part [of summer], maybe middle August … I started playing this particular song, ‘Country On,’ to people in my circle. I was having tremendous anxiety about not having a song out in the summer.”

“I started thinking, ‘I’m going to go the whole summer playing these amphitheaters and arenas, and [I don’t] have anything excitingly new to play,’” he added.

Bryan has written several of his own hits, including “What She Wants Tonight,” “What Makes You Country,” “Strip It Down” and more, but he has no problem, fortunately, recording songs by other songwriters as well.

“I looked at all my heroes—guys like George Strait and Brooks & Dunn—all of my heroes wrote songs and they found songs, too,” Bryan reflected, adding that he is fortunate to live in a town with so many talented songwriters.

“Somewhere in Nashville, there’s young songwriters writing right now with a fresh approach and a new way to say stuff,” he added. “For me, it’s always fun to really open up to the whole town to try to find new songs,”
