Parmalee could have their third consecutive No. 1 hit on their hands, with their current single, “Girl in Mine.” The song, which follows the chart-topping “Just the Way” collaboration wtih Blanco Brown, as well as the romantic “Take My Name,” is back with a new song, from a forthcoming new album.
Lead singer Matt Thomas wrote “Girl in Mine” with Ashley Gorley, Casey Brown, Travis Wood and David Fanning. The song began thanks to an idea from one of the song’s co-writers.
“We were in co-write session and that was one of the ideas that a co-writer had,” Thomas tells Everything Nash. “And as soon as I heard that hook line, I was like, ‘All right, I’m in. This is fun. This is right along the same lanes of everything we’re doing, speaking right to a girl.’ It just had a vibe. We needed something fun like this.”
With two back-to-back hit singles before “Girl in Mine,” Thomas is aware of the pressure to produce a follow-up hit. But even without “Just the Way” and “Take My Name,” Thomas always feels the pressure, albeit sometimes self-inflicted, to make sure Parmalee keeps putting out the best music they can.
“It never stops. It never stops,” Thomas says with a laugh. “You just gotta go with your gut and go with what feels right, and just hope. With the last two songs, we really kind of hit a nerve. I kind of hit a lane and I was like, ‘You know what? Let’s stay there for at least one more, and send one more down the pipeline.’ And I feel like this song definitely is. It’s my favorite song to play live, I”m not gonna lie. It’s great.”
“Girl in Mine” is from a forthcoming new album, which Thomas hopes is released in 2023.
“We’re working on it,” he reveals. “If all goes well, maybe something by the end of summer or fall is what I’m kind of shooting for, but nothing’s set in stone. We’ve been cutting songs, and I think now it’s just time to start dropping some new songs. We’re getting ready to go. The next couple of months while we have a little time off the road, we get to write some more. The cycle really never stopped. You’re just always trying to beat the best song you have, and that’s all it really boils down to.”
Parmalee recently earned an iHeartRadio Music Awards nomination, in the all-genre Best Duo / Group of the Year category. Other nominees in the category include Imagine Dragons, OneRepublic, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Black Eyed Peas, among others.
