Sam Hunt Reflects On Fatherhood As He Announces His Wife’s Pregnancy

Sam Hunt is going to be a father, again. The 38-year-old announced during a recent performance at Resorts World in Las Vegas that he and his wife, Hannah, are expecting their second child. The couple became first-time parents to their daughter, Lucy, born last May.

For Hunt, becoming a father was a completely transformative experience, in the best way possible.

“It’s changed drastically. I mean, the way I experience everything on a day-to-day basis is drastically changed,” Hunt previously shared with Everything Nash and other outlets during a media event. “I live outside of town, and there’s a little pond, a little gravel driveway. We live in a little cabin. There’s a little pond several hundred yards from the cabin. When we first moved out there, I’d go down to the pond occasionally, but not really all that often. And almost on a daily basis. I’ll take [Lucy] down to the pond and just sit her down the edge on the top of the canoe or just in the grass there.

“I experience the pond and the birds and whatever else is going on out there in nature in a way that I was just numb to before having a child,” he continues. “And so that goes for every other little thing, coffee in the morning or picking up a book and reading it as she’s playing on the floor. All those things that I maybe in the past, all of a sudden, I’m experiencing in a whole new way.”

Becoming a father impacted virtually every aspect of Hunt’s life, including his faith and how he conducts his day-to-day life.

“My faith in God has been big,” Hunt reflects. “And really, that’s something that I’ve really poured back into over the last year since having a baby. Sleep is a big thing for me. I used to pull late-night writing [sessions] all night, and I didn’t realize how much that was affecting my state of mind. And then,  eating healthy, just having healthy social relationships with my wife, my family, friends. I’ve always been the type who can disappear for weeks at a time, and go down the rabbit hole in the cave, trying to figure out the next song or the next idea, or try to put myself in a state of mind that’s going to unlock some creative part of my brain that I haven’t been able to tap into yet.”

It was becoming a father that made Hunt realize that some of his habits, ones he thought were helping him, were actually harming him more than helping.

“I really have an appreciation for balance this year so far, and even tail end of last year,” Hunt explains. “I’m really recognizing that especially, because I rarely made it past a month or two of living a healthy, routine lifestyle before I dive off into something else that throws me off. And so, that’s kind of where I am right now, just trying to keep a healthy routine going, even though sometimes it can get boring.”

Hunt will embark on his Summer On the Outskirts Tour on July 6, with Brett Young and Lily Rose serving as his opening acts. Find music and tour dates at SamHunt.com.
