2022 CMA Awards: Carrie Underwood Performs ‘Hate My Heart’ [WATCH]

Carrie Underwood wowed the crowd at the recent CMA Awards with a performance of her current single, “Hate My Heart.” The song, written by  David Garcia, Hillary Lindsey and HARDY, is from Underwood’s  Denim & Rhinestones album, out now.

Underwood was thinking about performing live when she wrote “Hate My Heart,” wanting more than anything to have a good time on stage, believing that it would also be fun for those attending her live shows as well.

“‘Hate My Heart’ was definitely part of my desire to have fun on this album,” Underwood said of the uptempo track. “I wanted songs that would be exciting to perform live and would fill up an arena, and that’s exactly what we’re about to do with The Denim & Rhinestones Tour. This one is definitely going to get everyone up on their feet and having a good time.”

The Oklahoma native just released the video for “Hate My Heart,” which was filmed at Nashville’s Wildhorse Saloon.

“‘Hate My Heart’ is a song about a break-up,” Underwood told E! News. “It’s kind of like you’re stuck. You’re just trying to get over this person. It’s like, you don’t really want to be back with them, but you’re having a hard time moving forward and moving on and putting it behind you. The video, we wanted to be helping these girls do that. It’s been a lot of fun to shoot, and hopefully everybody can see little bits of themselves in each of the characters in the video.”

Underwood kicked off the CMA Awards ceremony with a tribute to Loretta Lynn, joined by Miranda Lambert and Reba McEntire. She also performed in tribute to Alan Jackson, who received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award.

The American Idol  alum was nominated for four CMA Awards, including for the night’s highest honor Entertainer of the Year. Although that trophy went to Luke Combs, Underwood insists she felt like a winner by receiving the nomination.

“It is, obviously, such an honor to be nominated in Entertainer of the Year,” Underwood shared with her record label. “That’s such a tough category to be in, ‘cause there’s just so —  I don’t even want to call it competition, there’s just so many hard-working artists out there that are just pouring themselves and their time and their energy and their love and their artistry into what they do.

“To even be in the final category is just absolutely amazing. And hopefully, above all, we can all just remember that it’s a celebration of a great year in country music and in our careers as artists,” she added. “We’ll just see what happens, but definitely excited to be in that category.”
