Bill Gaither Says Coronavirus Has People ‘Turning to God Once Again’

Gospel music icon Bill Gaither is finding a reason for joy, even in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. The 84-year-old understands that many are fearful in these uncertain times, but those fears are doing one thing, he says: pointing people back to God.

“I think what this has done has got us back to the basics of what’s important,” Bill told One Country. “There are two points of life when we get serious – one is when a baby is born and the other is when we are faced with death. Otherwise we are in LaLa Land. This threat has gotten us out of LaLa Land and turning to God once again.”

The 84-year-old admits he doesn’t always understand all of the rules and restrictions that have been put in place, but he doesn’t need to understand to obey.

“I may not agree with all of the officials, but at this age, I’m just doing what they tell me to do,” Bill explained. “As far as I am concerned, I have a responsibility to not take up a hospital bed because I didn’t abide by the rules. And yes, there are many different opinions on how to tackle this – open it up and let everyone get it or hunker down – but it seems like we are taking the wiser course by listening to wisdom.”

Bill has already weathered plenty of storms in his life, which is why he is certain that good will even come out of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Life probably won’t be the same after this, but we are a part of a wonderful country that always seems to come together during times like this,” he added.

To date, Bill has won six Grammy Awards. He, along with his wife, Gloria Gaither, is recognized as one of the most proficient songwriters of the last century, penning songs such as “Because He Lives,” “Sinner Saved by Grace,” “He Touched Me” and more.
