Brett Eldredge on Coping With Anxiety: ‘Therapy Has Really Changed My Life’

Brett Eldredge has never hidden the fact that he regularly goes to therapy. The Illinois native has been vocal about his struggle with anxiety, and is now speaking out about the ways he is coping, especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Therapy has really changed my life over the last three or four years,” Brett admitted on Good Morning America. “I’ve been somebody that’s scared of vulnerability a little bit, but I’ve started to realize that opening up and realizing that you don’t have to be perfect –– perfection is not worth chasing down. Telling somebody your thoughts and what’s going on with your world, and having them help you find ways to cope with it is a big deal.”

Brett is passing on some of the things he has learned during his time in therapy to help others who are also struggling right now.

“One of the most important things in the world is to give ourselves time to listen to our thoughts and our heart and everything, and realize that these are tough times,” Brett acknowledged. “And also, that we can lean on each other and connect with each other. I’m an introverted person. I live this big life on stage and all of that, but when I really get away from all of that, I really just like to be with myself.

“But I started to realize when I pick up the phone and call somebody, when it was so much easier to watch another TV show, I learned that if I connect with somebody, that is a huge help for me,” he added.

Brett has also found that leaving his house is beneficial, for both his mental and physical health.

“Another thing is to get outside in a beautiful space,” said the singer. “There’s no one around me right now. It’s a safe way to get out, and get your feet dirty. Get outside. Look at the trees. Look at the birds and listen to them sing. If it’s raining, feel the rain on your skin and realize you’re alive.”

Brett didn’t fully appreciate the perks of fresh air, until the coronavirus pandemic forced everyone into their homes, and away from public spaces.

“During the start of all of this quarantine, I was like, ‘I wanna strive for something, to feel a little sense of accomplishment. Get outside of my head and get into something that I can focus on a little bit that can lean into these tough times a little bit,'” Brett explained. “Use that as your superpower when you’re running or working out or whatever it is.

“Today I ran 12 miles, and before this quarantine, six miles seemed like a thousand miles,” he continued. “That might have been the farthest I ever ran. Exercise is a massive thing.”

Brett has a deep understanding of what it is like to live with anxiety and fear, which is why he is offering words of hope to others who might find themselves in a similar situation.

“Stay strong through this tough time,” Brett encouraged. “We’re gonna make it to the other side. We’re gonna always be together through this, and that’s the most important thing.”

Brett just dropped “Gabrielle” as his latest single. The song is from his upcoming album, Sunday Drive. The record, which will be released on July 10, is available for pre-order at Amazon.
