Colin Stough is exploring a broken heart in his new song, “Makes Two of Us,” out now. Written by the American Idol alum, along with Alex Maxwell and Cole Taylor, the song is about the shared pain after a relationship ends.
“‘Makes Two of Us’ is about that after a breakup thing where you keep thinking about your ex,” Stough explains. “It’s those lonely moments when your brain kicks in and you start thinking about them, then you start debating on whether or not you should reach out just in case they’re thinking of you too.
“You find yourself wondering if they’re thinking of doing the same, even though you know that reaching out never gets you anywhere and is pretty much a horrible idea,” he adds.
“Makes Two of Us” is one of several new songs Stough will likely release this year. The Mississippi native has plenty of concert dates on the calendar, along with working on new music for those who have been with him since his time on Idol.
“I want to connect with more of my fans,” Stough told Everything Nash earlier this year. “I really want to give them a whole lot more opportunities. So that means we’re gonna play a whole lot more shows … And, we got another EP coming, got some singles coming.”
Stough was working in HVAC when his mother convinced him to audition for American Idol, never imagining where that one audition would take him.
“My mom told me, ‘I’m gonna sign you up for American Idol,” Stough recalled to Everything Nash. “I was like, ‘No, you’re not. Don’t do that.’ I really didn’t think I was good enough to be out there doing that with all of them. And when she called me up, I was leaving work. She was like, Hey, you need to go by so-and-so’s house and sit down and do these interviews with these folks. Take your guitar.’”
“And I was like, ‘Mama, I don’t think that you did the right thing,'” he added. “I tell everybody this, and it’s the honest-to-God truth: I thought she was getting scammed the whole time.”
Fortunately, his mother’s instincts about her talented son were correct, and Stough came in third place on Season 21 of American Idol. After his time on Idol, Stough moved to Nashville to focus on music full-time. Stough has already released songs like “I Still Talk to Jesus,” and his debut EP, Promiseland, which includes “Lonely Hour,” “Sleep Tonight” and more.
