We already knew that Scotty McCreery is working on a new album, which will be his sixth. But this one will be different than any of his previous records, thanks to his new role of being a dad to his son, Avery.
“There’s definitely gonna be some baby songs, as you could guess,” McCreery tells Taste of Country. “My music for sure has kind of leaned a little bit into that autobiographical stuff. Something that I learned about music is how alike we all are, rather than different. When I talk about my life, I could be talking about thousands of other people’s lives, and they relate to it, too. So there’ll be a lot of life stuff. Just about not taking things for granted, and that’s where I’m at right now — just appreciating this new stage of life, and new fatherhood.”
The new songs have earned praise from the person most important to him: his wife, Gabi. The American Idol alum admits she got a little teary when she listened to the new tracks.
“Definitely some waterworks for some of the songs, for sure,” McCreery acknowledges. “There’s one song that talks about him leaving his little boots up next to mine on that mat — that kind of thing.”
Having a baby has been a big adjustment for McCreery, but he admits he loves every part of it.
“This is the best thing that ever happened to me,” McCreery tells The Lufkin Daily News. “Avery is wonderful and Gabi is just crushing it as a mom. I’m doing everything I can to be a good dad.”
The 29-year-old is joined on the road this time by both Avery and Gabi out, while he crosses the country on his headlining Damn Strait Tour. It was a decision he made while Gabi was still pregnant, so he could enjoy family life while away from home.
“Next year we’re gonna bring out a baby bus, so we’ll get him out there,” McCreery told Everything Nash last year. “Gabi will be out there a lot with me too, so he’ll have his own little crib and everything. It’ll be a completely different way to do the road for me. I’ve been doing it now over ten years. I’ve got my system, so this is gonna throw that for a loop, but I can’t wait. It’s gonna be awesome.”
The North Carolina native is currently enjoying a Top 15 hit with “It Matters To Her.” The song was written by McCreery, along with Rhett Akins and Lee Thomas Miller, and was inspired by Gabi. “It Matters to Her” follows his multi-week, No. 1 “Damn Strait” single.
