Amy Grant Returns to Touring 4 Months After Bike Accident

Amy Grant is returning to life on the road, four months after being seriously injured in a bike accident. The gospel music singer kicked off her joint Christmas With Amy Grant & Michael W. Smith tour on Saturday, November 26 in Memphis, Tennessee, celebrating a triumphant return to performing, after canceling her fall tour dates to continue her recovery.

“Thank you Memphis!” Grant writes on social media. “After a season of healing at home, it was good to be back on stage with Michael W. Smith, Michael Tait and my musical family. Many thanks to ]Compassion], [Parenting Todays Teens] for your partnership on the road and for the important work you do in the U.S. and around the world. And thank you to [Balsam Hill] for providing exquisite trees and decor to make our stage look so beautiful. Finally, Thank YOU for your many prayers over the last few months and as my healing continues. I hope to see some of your familiar faces in the audience over the next few weeks.”

Grant was biking in Nashville’s popular Percy Warner Park on July 27, when she hit a pothole and fell off her bike. Her husband, Vince Gill, shared details of her injuries while performing as part of his four-night residency at the Ryman Auditorium.

“She was unconscious for about ten or 15 minutes,” Gill revealed from stage. “I don’t think they talked about that too much, but that was scary,”

Grant had hoped to return to touring in the fall, but announced in August that those dates needed to be postponed as well, while she continued to recover.

“Amy is getting stronger every day,” Grant’s longtime manager, Jennifer Cooke, said in a statement. “Just as she did after her heart surgery, we are amazed at how fast she heals. However, although she is doing much better, we have made the difficult decision to postpone her fall tour so she can concentrate on her recovery and rebuild her stamina. She wants to be able to give 100 percent when she tours and, unfortunately, we do not think that will be the case by the time rehearsals would start for the fall dates.”

Grant will follow her run with Smith with her annual residency with Gill, Christmas at the Ryman with Amy Grant & Vince Gill. She will take a break from her busy holiday schedule to receive the Kennedy Center Honors on December 4, along with U2, Gladys Knight, George Clooney, and composer and conductor Tania León.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine ever receiving this prestigious Kennedy Center Honor,” Grant said of the accolade. “Through the years I’ve watched so many of my heroes serenaded by colleagues and fellow artists, always moved by the ability of music and film to bring us together and to see the best in each other. I cannot wait to celebrate with my fellow honorees, friends and family. Thank you for widening the circle to include all of us.”

The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony will air on Wednesday, December 28, on CBS.
