Happy anniversary to Scotty McCreery and his wife, Gabi! The couple tied the knot five years ago, on June 16, 2018, in the couple’s home state of North Carolina.
McCreery and Dugal dated for six years before they got married. The American Idol alum proposed to his longtime girlfriend while on a hike in the mountains of North Carolina.
“I’ve been planning this moment for so long that it feels surreal for it to have finally happened,” McCreery told People at the time. “Gabi is the perfect girl and my true love, and I cannot wait to begin building our life together as husband and wife.”
McCreery’s childhood pastor wed the pair, with McCreery later sharing footage of their wedding in the video for his No. 1 single, “This Is It,” inspired by their romance.
“They did a great job with capturing all the emotion,” McCreery told The Knot. “I hope fans see how fun of a wedding it was. The music video is very documentary-style… There are moments when you see me all emotional, and Gabi smiling and showing all 32 of her teeth.”

“It was a lot,” McCreery recalled to PopCulture.com. “I really was fine the whole day. I held it together and then we did a first look, and I could almost feel her presence coming behind me. When I did, I just started crying. All her bridesmaids were upstairs at the estate. They were looking all going, ‘Ooh!’ It was a lot. It was very overwhelming but a very big, great moment I guess you could say.”
A lot of McCreery’s songs are inspired by Gabi, including his No. 1 single, “You Time,” and his latest hit, “It Matters To Her.”
“It was really a time where she was super, super busy at work,” McCreery told Everything Nash, speaking of “You Time.” “I was just on the road constantly. I’d come home from the road and she’d be going out to work, and we’d just be passing each other, all the time. So, it was at a moment where I was really craving some you time. Like, we can see our friends later. We’ll see the family later, but right now just needs to be you time.”
“It Matters To Her” shows the wisdom that comes with settling into married life, and realizing what is — and isn’t — important.
“I’m a lyric guy,” McCreery notes. “I’m a story guy, a message guy. And this story was just us sitting back, talking one day, me and Rhett [Akins] and LeeThomas Miller and just being like, ‘Man, you know what I’m learning? It’s just the littlest things. Like if I go downstairs and just empty the dishwasher, and she doesn’t have to tell me to stop watching golf and go do it, it’s a little thing, but it adds up over time. And I’m learning as a young husband, that’s what adds up and makes the difference.’
“And I can still work on it,” he added. “Like, I still shave and leave my beard hair in the sink. and she yells from downstairs like, ‘What the heck?’ But, it’s a cool song to sing.”
This year marks the first year the couple is celebrating their anniversary as parents, with the addition of their son, Avery, born in October — and making McCreery fall even more in love with his wife.
“I thought I loved her a lot before. She’s the mother of my son, and now I’m finding that I love her even more,” McCreery told Music Mayhem earlier this year. “She’s a champ. She’s working so hard and doing so great as a mom already. So, I’ll be writing for sure a lot of songs about her and definitely tying the kiddo into some songs. Maybe writing for him too. I think it’s all great things right now. We’re in a great season.”
McCreery is currently on the road with Brooks & Dunn, serving as the opening act on their REBOOT 2023 Tour. He will be inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, and hints that he has something else coming later this year at a football stadium, which he will hopefully announce soon.
